(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/lURWB)
This is a daunting task so let me help. I've been in NYC for my whole life of nearly 50 years and unlike the typical native-born New Yorker, I have explored this city throughout, even having lived in 4 of the 5 boros over the years, and not always in the "good" neighborhoods. Needless to say, I know the good deals in NYC and I can tell you mine is one of the best in terms of value, comfort, and convenience. In the end though it depends on what you are looking for from your vacation and my place, like all others, is certainly not suitable for everyone.
What I can offer is the following:
- a spacious, comfortable, and clean room with digital cable TV, 1 quality queen bed, 1 super quality twin bed, air-conditioning, WI-FI, windows on both the East and South sides for lots of sun if you want but quality dark wood shades if you want little light, 2 chest of drawrs, dressers, nightstand, closet, reading lamp, overhead light, and your own set of keys to keep everything locked for your own peace of mind.
- shared* access to a clean, spacious kitchen where you are free to cook, use the large refrigerator, and eat-in. Remember eating out 3 meals a day in NYC can be quite expensive. Your food bill can easily be your highest expense with 3 meals a day averaging $15-20/person/meal. Less if you are eating your meals in Queens, most of Brooklyn, and the Bronx. So having a place to store and reheat leftovers and cook once in a while can save you hundreds, literally.
- shared* access to a clean, large living room with hardwood floors to stretch(my floors are always hand-cleaned regularly), 42" digital cable TV, leather sofa, comfortable leather recliner, air conditioner, selection of board games and books to read, one of those exercise balls, a set of dumbbells if you are afraid of getting out of shape while you are here. Don't be afraid of the bike rack. In fact feel free to pull a bike down and take it for a ride. There are bicycle lanes that go directly to and from Manhattan.
- shared* access to a cmputer/office area with a computer, 24-inch monitor, printer, and scanner just in case you need.
- an immaculately maintained apartment building with a beautifully landscaped courtyard, elevator, and laundry facilities.
- a great neighborhood, close to mass transit(2 short blocks away), close to Times Square, safe, quiet, lots of restaurants, lots of supermarkets and other shopping areas, playgrounds. Remember I've lived in NYC my whole life and I chose to live here to support my life-style, one in which I own no car and like to be close enough to Manhattan for dance and capoeira classes as well as some nightlife and playing handball at the Westside YMCA. I also like to be just outside of Manhattan to live because it's less congested(fewer people and far fewer rats, which I never see around my place) and saves me thousands a year.
* shared access is only shared access for the occupants of the other bedroom. Usually that occupant is me and I am not home much because I work a full time job, teach college part time at night, and, when I'm not working, I'm playing ball or taking some class. I rarely cook and I use the shower at the gym instead of the shower at home. In this vein shared access is nearly exclusive access.
While I'm not out of words now, I'm sure you want to continue researching your accommodations so I'll cut it short here. Think about your options and if you are hung up on a choice because you are uncertain of some aspect of NYC, feel free to contact me even if you know you are not interested in my place. I'll be happy to answer your questions as I want you to have a great NYC vacation.
