DescriptionThe Bing Crosby Thunderbird Heights Estate is a luxury villa located in Rancho Mirage, CA.This legendary five bedroom celebrity golf estate offers panoramic views and a desert lifestyle retreat, all in a gated estate. This Bing Crosby legendary home is located in Thunderbird Heights in a guarded enclave. The estate is well preserved and updated for living today. The ?Crooner? himself enjoyed desert living, including his love for golf in this spectacular residence across from the Thunderbird Country Club, which the actor-singer helped establish.Bing Crosby sold his golf course lot in 1952, and purchased the first house in what became Thunderbird Heights with his first wife Dixie Lee.This luxury estate rests on the hillside in the center of Rancho Mirage in a neighborhood with history, charm, and plenty of celebrity scandal from the 1950's through the 1970's. Despite Dixie Lee?s death in 1952, Bing Crosby and his four sons (Gary, twins Dennis and Phillip, and Lindsay) continued to enjoy the estate until moving to the ranch home in Palm Desert and his marriage to his new wife and actress, Katherine Grant. Thunderbird Heights is and was the place to be for the rich and famous. Many infamous stories can be told about the playground of the Presidents and celebrities alike. In the early 1960?s, Frank Sinatra was outraged with Peter Lawford (Rat Pack Crony) over a scheduled trip to Palm Springs by then President of United States, John F. Kennedy. Lawford, brother-in-law to the President informed Sinatra that the President would stay at Bing Crosby's residence and not his. Bobby Kennedy, the President's brother and attorney general, became concerned about Sinatra's extensive links to organized crime and disreputable people who had been Sinatra?s house guests. Bobby Kennedy did not want the President to stay with Sinatra as a result. Sinatra was livid at the decision of the Crosby residence, of all people -- the ?other? singer and a Republican to boot. Sinatra had a heliport and numerous phone lines put into his home in Rancho Mirage in preparing for the President?s arrival that never happened. The estate today includes a main house with an attached guesthouse including an artist's studio in a total of about 4,200 square feet of indoor living. The home?s elegance with modern greek column and a low roof-line include a blend of custom-made furnishings and contemporary comforts to epitomize a desert quality of life. The residence features eclectic décor and accents from Asian influences starting with the foyer?s 10 foot rustic front door to 50?s nostalgic film posters in the state-of-the-art movie theater. Pocket glass walls open the great room out to the lanai creating additional living space while enjoying the desert panoramic landscape in the distance.Sandstone flooring is laid throughout the entertainment and living areas to the pool including the billiards area and indoor wet bar. The master quarters includes approximately 1400 square feet for pampered privacy and relaxation including a sitting area with fireplace and an ensuite spa-quality bathroom with outdoor shower access. The additional sleeping quarters are also luxuriously appointed and accented. The kitchen and dining area with modern Thermador appliances are perfect for casual or formal dining. Outdoor dining is also available with the BBQ kitchen island and patio dining area. The pebble tech pool and spa with adjacent fire pits are perfect for lounging. A putting green as the Crooner himself might have practice on is also available. The home is updated with the latest technology and is the perfect retreat for families, golf enthusiast, or Bing Crosby fans.
